Kievan Rus Clothing (Kyivan Rus)

These garments take inspiration from a rich history that spanned from the late 9th to the mid-13th century. Established around 882, it comprised a variety of principalities ruled from the city of Kyiv, which was the capital at that time, and embraced a mosaic of cultures including East Slavic, Norse, and Finnic peoples. This diversity in the society shaped nearly every facet of the region from art to trade to politics. 

The golden age of Kievan Rus was in the 10th and 11th centuries when it became a major political and trading power. A major societal turning point was when Christianity, in particular the Orthodox faith, was embraced. However, from the 12th century, Kievan Rus suffered political fragmentation and eventually collapsed when pitted against various conquerors, such as the Mongols, and the siege of Kyiv. 

In recent years, the alternative spelling “Kyivan Rus” has become more common, reflecting the international shift towards the Ukrainian form “Kyiv” instead of the Russian-influenced “Kiev,” especially in light of current political developments.
